Getting New Floors Before the Holidays: A Central Florida Planning Guide

Gray large-format tile flooring in a living room

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us. One minute it’s October, and the next you’re counting chairs for Thanksgiving dinner and wondering whether the worn carpet in the living room will survive another family visit. If new floors are on your wish list before guests arrive, now is the time to start planning.

Here’s how to plan a flooring project around the holidays, from the folks who have been installing floors across Central Florida since 1981.

Why Start Now?

A flooring project involves more than installation day. You’ll want time to compare samples, get a measured estimate, choose your floor and schedule the work, and many homeowners have the same idea this time of year. Starting in October or early November gives you room to make decisions without rushing, and a better chance of having everything finished and settled before the house fills up.

A Simple Holiday Flooring Timeline

Step 1: Get a free estimate

Visit our Sanford showroom by appointment, or have a Pace professional bring samples to your home and measure your rooms. You’ll get a detailed, free estimate and an idea of how long your project will take.

Step 2: Choose your floor

See samples side by side in your own lighting. If you’re torn between options, our team will walk you through the pros and cons of luxury vinyl, tile, wood and carpet for each room.

Step 3: Schedule installation

Lock in your installation date as early as possible, and build in a little cushion before your first guests arrive.

Step 4: Removal and installation

Our crew moves your furniture, removes and hauls away the old flooring and installs your new floors, then cleans up when we’re finished.

Which Projects Fit Best Before the Holidays?

  • Luxury vinyl plank: usually one of the faster floors to install, and waterproof, which is handy when guests spill a drink. See our vinyl flooring.
  • New carpet in bedrooms and guest rooms: a quick way to make guest spaces feel fresh and comfortable. See our carpet.
  • Main living and dining areas: where guests spend the most time, so they’re the best place to start if you can’t do the whole house.
  • A kitchen backsplash: a relatively quick update that makes a big impression in the room where everyone gathers. See our backsplash page.

Bigger projects, like tile throughout the house or a full tile shower remodel, take longer because of removal, waterproofing and curing time. They’re still very doable with enough lead time, so ask about your timeline during your estimate. Learn what to expect with a tile shower remodel.

Short on Time? Phase It

If the whole house isn’t realistic before the holidays, start with the rooms guests will see most: the entry, living room, dining room and guest bedroom. Choose your flooring for the whole house now so the rooms you do later will match.

How to Prepare Your Home for Installation Day

  • Clear small items, decorations and breakables from the rooms getting new floors.
  • Empty closets that are part of the project.
  • Plan where pets and kids will be during installation.
  • Hold off on putting up holiday decorations in those rooms until the work is done.

After Installation

Ask your installer about any waiting period before moving heavy furniture back or cleaning, especially with tile, where grout needs time to cure. Add felt pads to chair and table legs and put mats at the entry doors before the guests arrive, and your new floors will look great well past the holidays.
